West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused opposition parties of obstructing state government efforts to fill nearly half a million vacant positions across various departments, including schools and police. Banerjee addressed the issue during a government program in Hooghly district, where she inaugurated projects worth around ₹4,000 crore.
She emphasized the government's intention to recruit extensively but lamented the opposition's alleged interference. Banerjee stated, "We want to give appointments to half a million people in the state government. But ask the CPIM and BJP leaders not to create obstacles and ruin the future of unemployed youths."
Calcutta High Court is currently hearing several Public Interest Litigations (PILs) concerning purported irregularities in recruitment drives within schools and civic bodies. Meanwhile, federal agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are investigating these alleged scams.
Opposition leaders have retaliated, alleging irregularities within the recruitment processes, prompting deserving candidates to seek legal intervention. Tarunjyoti Tewari, advocate and BJP leader, stated, "We are not against appointments if they are transparent and based on merit. But we would certainly move court if there’s corruption."
